Born in Zanzibar, British protectorate in East Africa Mercury was famous for being "Britain's first Asian rock star". As a leading vocalist, lyricist, musician, singer, songwriter of the rock band Queen he got 58th place in the BBC’s poll of the 100 Greates Britons. Time Asia ranked him one of the most influential Asian heroes of the past 60 years.
Freddie Mercury didn’t disclose his HIV status for several years, even though, according to Jum Hutton, his partner, he was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987. He died of bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS Novermber 24th 1991, only a day after he publicly acknowledged he had the disease.
Even today Freddie Mercury is considered to be one of the greatest singers in the history of popular music.
